GETTING A COVER LETTER RIGHT

When applying for a job  its often requested that you send in your resume and a cover letter.
It's also obvious from research that a large number of people do not know the essence or  purpose of a cover letter ;and as such what is sent in is usually a poor representation of who you are and what you can

For starters, a cover letter is not an extension of your resume.

A large number of applicants use their cover letters to further summarize their resumes. That is a big NO-NO.

A cover letter is an opportunity to sell yourself and make the company see why you are a preffered candidate.

A cover letter should be tailored to the particular job, organization and position you're applying for.

So for those who keep using one format for all applications; I hope you see why you were never called.

Your cover letter must indicate what caught  your attention about the  job/ company and why you are choosing this job above any one out there.

Your cover letter should indicate what makes you right for the job; asides what's mentioned in your resume.

In summary your cover letter should answer the following questions

Who are you?
What you're seeking and why
What you can do
What differentiates you from other applicants
What values can you add to the business

Anything outside these are like they say  "story for the gods "

Have a great week ahead.

Thoughts on Thursday

I've heard countless of people including myself express dissatisfaction with their current jobs. But I have come to one realization. We all want better jobs,  but do we have something better to offer in return.
Nothing is free in the universe.
A price has to be paid
Nobody owes you a  great career.
You need to be good at something before you can expect a good job.

The #NoFilter Employee: Things you should NEVER say to your Boss

The one person who can sabotage your career and take you through a detour you never envisaged is your "Boss"
The one person who can advance your cause and also boost your growth up that corporate ladder is no other than your "Boss".

Bottom line, this Boss of yours whether young or old, male or female, tall or short, overweight or malnourished,  friend or foe, should be accorded a high level or respect because of the amount of power they wield.

Regardless of what your relationship is with your Boss ,  a constant remembrance of your place with them and a recognition of where to draw the line will do your career a lot of good. There are things you should NEVER do or say to your boss if you want to remain in his/her good graces.

Some of these things are pretty obvious while others are implicit. Either way, below are a few "Don't say" to your boss in the workplace

"I Can't: : Nobody wants a surbodinate with bad energy around them.

"I disagree" : unless asked,  keep your opinion to yourself. And if you're asked find a judicious way to make your point

I Can't work with him/her": team playing is critical to the success of any organization or group today. So nobody wants a party pooper.  It's true there are certain people who seem like are designed to get on your nerves .And it's even truer there's often little or nothing you can do about them. There will always be people like this and if you keep saying you can't work this person or that person,  it would begin to seem as though you are the one with the problem. Manage the situation, mange your colleagues

"My former Boss did it better ": This is major blow on your bosses face. Statements like this undermine his/her abilities and would get you out the door in no time.

"It's not my fault ": You might think saying this exonerates  you, but it only projects you as someone who  is not ready to take responsibility.  When an opportunity for growth comes along, trust me you won't be on the top of his/her list

"It's not my in my JD (Job Description): One thing you should learn early in your career is that no JD is cast in stone.  Your JD includes everything you were employed to do and any other additional task assigned by your line manager or boss- as long as its official.

"I'll try": this is like telling your boss in advance there a likelihood of failure in whatever task he or she is delegating to you. It's a vote of no confidence from him(Boss) to you.

The list is not exhaustive,  thus it's your responsibility to learn what is acceptable and what is not.
Most importantly when speaking with your boss, line manager or senior colleague,  Don't just say the first thing that comes to your mind.
Filter it

P.S: Your Boss does not necessarily have to be the CEO or Managing director of your organization.
Anyone who is ahead of you in terms of rank or designation and anyone who has the power to influence or decide on how you're appraised, should be treated with same amount of regards.

Before you click that SEND button: 10 email etiquette for the workplace

The advancement of technology over the years has no doubt revolutionalized our world:especially the corporate world.

Gone are the days when you had to be on your desk to receive an e-mail, or worse still visit a local cafe to catch up on your inbox.
We now live in an " on the go society" where you can catch up with anything and everything at anytime, anywhere, e-mails especially.

A number of us were schooled in the art of letter writing,  which used to be one of the predominant means of communication many years ago, so it's no surprise that when the world of emails came to take it's rightful place, it caught us napping.

The workplace is a small community on it's own and its important you learn the rules of engagement before you become that person everybody wants nothing to do with.

As niggling as it may seem, e-mails amongst every other thing have the power to Make or Mar your career.  "People meet you before meeting you". Your emails create an impression about you even before getting  to know the real you. So there's need to make sure you're sending the right substance  across each time.

Below are essentials you must consider before you click that send button.

Your mail title must be sharp and concise. Often times people decide whether or not to open an email based on the title.  The title of your mail must give the recipient a very good idea of the contents of your mail.  Both of which must correspond.

Don't ever send mail in caps. (Capital letters ). It's rude, it's shouty and definitely not acceptable.

When replying a mail, use the "reply all" button cautiously. Only copy those who need to be in the know. People have a lot to deal with on a daily bases, don't add your irrelevant mails to them. May I also add that people who are in the habit of replying everyone regardless of if they should be in the know or not come of as "unintelligent & socially dull"

When greeting,  it's best practice to use "Hello, Hi, Good Morning  or Good Afternoon " . Avoid using "Dear "

Ensure your mails are in line with the standard or acceptable signature in your organization.  E.g

There's no one way of creating a mail signature,  however your signature must display your name  ( i. e who the mail is originating from), your designation, your phone number, address , name of the organization you work with and in most cases the logo.

Don't abbreviate when sending mails in the workplace.  An e-mail is not the same as a text message.  Always type your messages in full,  you never can tell who is going to see them.

Don't respond to a mail when angry. It's best to sit on it for 24hours before responding.  That way you're such it's your brain/common sense doing the talking not your emotions.

Ignoring mails is not just an act of plain rudeness,  it makes you come of as irresponsible. Even if the mail was sent in error and wasn't meant for you, be nice enough to say that in your response and if possibly put the right person  (If you know who that is ) in copy

Proofread your mails before sending them out. Don't rely on spell checkers alone. Remember each mail you send says something about you. If your mails are filled with grammatical or spelling errors, you might make people begin to wonder about  how you got the job in the first place.

Put the recipients mail address last just in case you erroneously click the send button before you're done

The list is endless and there's need to constantly educate yourself on what's acceptable and what is not.
Remember there's no second chance to make a good first impression .

Do you know of more e-mail etiquettes? Please share.

Which is your glass ball: The illusion of work life balance

How many times have you heard someone complain about how much work has consumed their lives and how little time they have for anything else? Quite often I suppose.

After reading several articles written on this subject matter one thing stands out; work life balance is an illusion. The issue of Work life balance has been a subject of concern for many years to individuals,  organizations and even countries as a whole; and that is yet to change. As the advent of technology has not made it any easier

Work life balance suggests that an equal portion of your time, be apportioned to every domain of your life. Which is downright impossible as these different domains weigh differently relative to their priorities to in your life.

In the true sense of it, your work is an essential part of your life ;whether you're running  your own business or as an employee in an organization ; and to a large extent we are defined by our works regardless of what profession we practice or passion we are in pursuit of.

The ideology of work life balance seeks to separate work from life.
So many people have come up with various theories & formulas on how to "balance"these various domains;  but I must establish that there is no hard and fast rule to achieving this.
The only solution is for each individual to seek ways to blend /harmonize the various spheres in our lives.

First you need to identify which domain is of most importance to you. Naturally that domain will likely be apportioned the largest portion of of your time and whatever comes next on your priority list in queued up

I'm not here to tell you how  to live or harmonize your life. That's a personal race for each and every one of us & more often than not, the way we live our life is a reflection of what or who is most important to us.

For example, what's important for an individual who is just climbing the career ladder differs from what's important for another who has gone mid way.
Permit me to cite a personal example. When my husband secured a job with a multinational,  he was so busy that every other person and every other thing had to retrofit into his life.
It was a nightmare that begun to take its toll on our relationship,  his relationship with the children, his health , and even with other family members.  After a lot introspective thinking he decided to reharmonise his life. He started doing more of his reports at home, he took me to a number of official functions,  he took more interest in what was happening in his children's life and many other minor adjustments.

Now did he create a balance?  Not at all. Did he create a more harmonious blend?  He certainly did. My husband's work still consumes the largest portion of his time. But do we (his family ) still feel left out?  No.

For me there no such thing as work life balance.  I have a job with 2 kids, a husband and a home to manage ; and neither one is dispensable right now. I consider myself a juggler with balls representing the various domains of my life.

Of all the balls I'm juggling, work is a rubber ball. If it drops, it would bounce back up . My family on the other hand is a glass ball I can't afford to drop because once it shatters there's no going back.

Seek the harmony that most pleasing to you.
Identify which is your glass ball(s) & when you do, try not to drop it/them.

I leave you in the words of  Nigel Marsh, author of Fat, Forty, and Fired

" It’s up to us as individuals to take control and responsibility for the types of lives that we want to lead. If you don’t design your life, then someone else may just design it for you, and you may not like their idea of balance.”

In what ways have you tried to harmonize the spheres of your life? Do share.
